Reading Pictures: Using Wordless Picture Books to Unlock Joy for Children

A Wordless Book is made up of pictures and no words to let readers insert themselves into stories as interpreters. Wordless books empower readers to use their own vocabulary and imagination to create and infer a story based on a series of images.

Wordless picture books encourage collaboration between a child and an educator. Because of the absence of a read-aloud component, how children interpret the images and choose to talk about them can help adults see what’s in front of them with completely new eyes as well. Wordless picture books also enable lateral thinking in readers who use the same visuals to tell multiple stories at every reading.
