~ The Idea ~
Three steps. Nothing to organise.
1
Give the hour
Give the hour. Spend it with a child. Full attention. They decide what you do together. They might ask for ice cream, a story, a movie, or just to play. Whatever it is, go with it.
How you give depends on who you are
2

~ Step 1 · Give the hour ~
How you give depends on who you are
The hour looks a little different depending on where you’re standing. Find yourself below, and tap a card for ideas.
Individuals ~Justdecide,anddoit.
Parent
- Cook something together and let them pick the dish, mess and all.
- Go for a walk with no destination — stop wherever they’re curious.
- Ask them to teach you something: a game, a dance move, a trick from school.
Caregiver
- Read a story together and let them change the ending, or invent one from scratch.
- Sit in quiet time together — no screen, no agenda, just presence.
- Let them invent a game on the spot, with their own rules, and actually play by them.
Teacher or Anganwadi Worker
- Hand over one session or period to children’s choice — they pick the songs, games, stories, or activities.
- Run a “No-Stage Play Day” — open, unstructured play, no competitions or prizes.
- Afterwards, ask each child which of the 8 Wonders they noticed, and put their answers up on a wall.
Collectives ~Needa venue,apolicy call,or ateamdecisionfirst.
Non-profit
- Host a small circle (a “Bachpan Baithak”) where children and adults just talk about what makes childhood joyful.
- Help children identify a cause they care about and support them in acting on it, however small.
- Invite donors, your own team, or caregivers to your venue for a shared child-led hour instead of a formal event.
Corporate
- A team skill-swap hour — employees’ children teach the team something.
- Open the office for a family afternoon — kids “sit in” on a project or run a mock meeting.
- Offer paid hours for employees to volunteer at a partner NGO’s child-led activity.
Govt Organisation
- A simple circular enabling schools or anganwadis in your network to run a child-led hour that week.
- Recognise participating institutions publicly, rather than asking them to file a report.
- Fold a child-led corner into an existing programme — a health camp, a ration day.
Public Institution
- Libraries: hand the reading room to the children for an hour — they choose the books.
- Museums: let children explore exhibits normally off-limits, guided by their own curiosity.
- Parks: host open, unscheduled play — no organised activity, just space and time.
Community Group
- A street play evening — block off a lane, let the kids organise their own games.
- A children’s flea market — kids run the stalls, set the prices, make the trades.
- An intergenerational skill swap — elders teach a craft, kids teach a game or an app.
Media
- Interview a child about their own childhood, and publish it without adult narration over it.
- A short series where public figures reflect on their own Bachpan and one commitment they’ll make.
- Invite your audience to share their own hour, and build the story around theirs rather than your brand’s.

You won’t plan for these. Watch for them anyway.
Nobody sets out to hit all eight. But give a child an hour with no agenda, and chances are several of these will show up on their own.

~ Keeping It Safe ~
Protected time, not a performance
Child choice comes first.
Nothing here is compulsory, for the child or the adult.
Ask, every time
Capture the moment, not the face
hands, drawings, an object, a voice note carry the story just as well; no child is named or tagged, shared or not.
Sharing is optional
show hands or drawings instead of faces, or keep it entirely between you and the child.
~ Questions ~
~ Before you give your hour
1 What does "child-led" actually mean?
2 I already have an idea for how we should spend the hour — can I use it?
3 What if my child doesn't want to do anything specific?
4 Does my child need to be young for this to count?
Not at all, any age counts.
