பொள்ளாச்சிக்கு அருகிலுள்ள ஒரு சிறிய கிராமத்தைச் சேர்ந்த விவசாயக் குடும்பப் பெண் சரண்யா, தனது குழந்தை இரண்டு வயதாக இருந்தபோதே வீட்டுக் கல்வியைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தார்.
“பசிக்கும்போது சாப்பிட வேண்டும், தூக்கம் வரும்போது தூங்க வேண்டும், விளையாட விரும்பும்போது விளையாட வேண்டும் – இப்படிப்பட்ட சுதந்திரத்தோடு கற்றல் நடைபெற வேண்டும்” என்பதே அவரது எண்ணம்.

அவருக்கு முக்கியமானது, மகன் எதனை விரும்புகிறான், எதனை விரும்பவில்லை, எதில் ஆர்வம் கொண்டிருக்கிறான் என்பதை கவனித்து, அதற்கேற்ப அதிக நேரம் செலவிடச் செய்வதே. கூட்டு குடும்பத்தில் இயற்கை வாழ்வை மையமாகக் கொண்டவர் அவர்.

வீட்டுக் கல்வியை வழங்கிக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது, அனுபவங்கள் பலவற்றை மகனுடன் பகிர்ந்து கொடுக்க அடிக்கடி வெளியே அழைத்துச் செல்ல வேண்டியிருந்தது. சில சமயம் தூரப் பயணங்களும் தேவைப்பட்டது. ஆனால், அது எப்போதும் சாத்தியமாகவில்லை.

அதனால், மகன் 4.5 வயதாக இருந்தபோது, “ஏன் இங்கேயே ஒரு மாற்றுக் கற்றல் மையத்தைத் தொடங்கக்கூடாது?” என்று யோசித்தார் சரண்யா. அந்த எண்ணத்திலிருந்து 2022-ஆம் ஆண்டு ‘நிறை மாற்றுக் கற்றல் மையம்’ உருவானது.

இங்கு குழந்தைகள் தங்களது மரபுகள், கலாச்சாரம் ஆகியவற்றை அறிந்து கொள்ளும் வகையில் பண்டிகைக் காலங்களில் சிறப்பு பட்டறைகள் நடத்தப்படுகின்றன. தொடக்கத்தில் கதை சொல்லல், களிமண் வடிவமைப்பு போன்ற செயல்பாடுகளுடன் ஆரம்பித்த இந்த மையத்தில் இதுவரை 25-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட பட்டறைகள் நடைபெற்றுள்ளன.

வீட்டுக் கல்வியைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்த குழந்தைகளிலிருந்து, தினசரி பள்ளிக்கு செல்லும் குழந்தைகள் வரை சுமார் 30 உள்ளூர் குடும்பங்கள் தொடர்ந்து இந்த மையத்தில் கலந்துகொள்கின்றன.
மேலும், பொள்ளாச்சியில் உள்ள சுமார் ஆறு வீட்டுக் கல்வி பெற்றோர் வாரத்திற்கு ஒருமுறை இம்மையத்தில் கூடுகின்றனர். குழந்தைகள் சுதந்திரமாக விளையாடிக்கொண்டிருக்கும்போது, பெற்றோர் தங்களது அனுபவங்களைப் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டு, ஒருவருக்கொருவர் ஆதரவாக இருக்கும் இடமாகவும் இது திகழ்கிறது.

இது குழந்தைகளுக்கு மட்டும் அல்லாமல், அம்மாக்களுக்கும் பல்வேறு வல்லுநர்களை அழைத்து நிகழ்ச்சிகள் நடத்துகிறார் சரண்யா.
அதேபோல், இளமைக் பருவப் பெண்களுக்கான விழிப்புணர்வு மற்றும் திறன் வளர்ச்சி தொடர்பான பட்டறைகளையும் நடத்தி வருகிறார்.

சரண்யா ஒரு சிக்கு கோலம் ஆர்வலர். அவர் “சிறுவர் கோலம்” என்ற புத்தகத்தை எழுதியுள்ளார்; தற்போது குழந்தைகளுக்கான இன்னொரு கோலம் புத்தகத்தை எழுதிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்.

“இந்த மையத்தை வளங்கள் நிறைந்த, திறந்த கற்றல் இடமாக விரிவுபடுத்த வேண்டும்” என்பதே சரண்யாவின் கனவு. அப்படி நடந்தால்தான், குழந்தைகள் சுதந்திரமாக விளையாடிக் கொண்டே உலகத்தை கற்றுக்கொள்ளும் வாய்ப்பு பெருகும் என்று அவர் நம்புகிறார்.

Nirai Alternative Learning Center – An Open Learning Space for Children and Parents

Saranya, from a farming family in a village near Pollachi, chose homeschooling when her child was just two years old. She believes that learning should be free and natural: “Children should eat when they are hungry, sleep when they are sleepy, and play when they wish. Learning happens best with such freedom.”

For her, the most important thing was to notice what her son liked, disliked, and enjoyed spending time on, and to nurture his interests. She lives in a joint family that values a nature-centered lifestyle.

While homeschooling, she often had to take her son out to share diverse experiences with him. Sometimes, this meant long travels – which was not always possible.

That’s when, when her son was 4.5 years old, Saranya thought: “Why not start an alternative learning space right here?” From that thought, in 2022, Nirai Alternative Learning Center was born.

Here, children are introduced to traditions and culture through workshops, especially during festivals. What began with storytelling and clay modeling has now grown – with more than 25 workshops conducted so far.

Today, around 30 local families participate in the center – from homeschooling families to children who attend regular schools.
In addition, about six homeschooling parents in Pollachi meet here once a week. While the children play freely, parents share experiences and support each other, making this a strong community space.

The center is not just for children – Saranya also invites experts to hold sessions for mothers, and organizes workshops for adolescent girls on awareness and skill development.

Saranya is also a Sikku Kolam enthusiast. She has authored a children’s kolam book (“Siruvargal Kolam”), and is currently writing her second.

Her dream is to expand Nirai into a resource-rich, open learning space. She believes that only then will children truly have the freedom to play and learn about the world in their own joyful ways.

In April 2025, I visited the Nirai Alternative Learning Center in Pollachi after first discovering it through an Instagram post shared by a pediatrician.

During my visit, I saw many of the Bachpan Manao values come alive – joyful learning, community, culture, and the freedom for children to follow their curiosity. Nirai is a living example of how play and freedom can nurture childhood.
