As part of a nationwide effort to promote play in early childhood, UNICEF India, in collaboration with the EkStep Foundationโs Bachpan Manaoย initiative, developed a set of simple, practical resources for parents and caregivers. These tools offer everyday ideas for playing with children up to 8 years oldโsupporting their imagination, emotional wellbeing, and social development through joyful, low-cost activities.
Launched in June 2024 to mark the International Day of Play, the resources are part of a campaign that encourages families to dedicate an hour each dayโespecially from 5 to 6 pmโfor child-led, unstructured play. This โHour of Free Playโ was celebrated across India as a reminder that play is essential to a childโs healthy growth and learning, not just a recreational activity.
To ensure wide access, the materials are available in five Indian languages, making it easier for families from diverse regions to engage meaningfully with their children. Whether itโs storytelling, role play, movement, or outdoor exploration, each idea reinforces the message that play is a powerful and necessary part of every childโs daily life.
