Creativity

creativity

Creativity gives children the freedom to make, express, pretend and imagine. Drawing, music, movement, construction and role-play invite them to explore possibilities without searching for one correct answer.

Creative experiences can also offer children a language for feelings they cannot yet explain in words. What matters is not the finished product, but the opportunity to make choices, experiment and create something that feels like their own.

why it matters

Creative activities exercise imagination, flexible thinking and self-expression. Pretend play also allows children to explore roles, situations and emotions at a safe distance.

In one randomized trial, dramatic pretend-play games improved emotional self-control among four-year-olds, although they did not improve every social-emotional outcome studied. Research source: Developmental Science randomized trial
